As we begin to close off the year, I always enjoy finding time to reflect on our year, and also to plan ahead for the next. As sad as I feel typing this, planning and goal setting is truly is one of my favourite things to do – it sets the direction for your future.
Without a roadmap, you’ll continue to wander aimlessly, never really knowing whether you’ve succeeded or failed.

In this post, I’m going to help you with your 2019 goal planning using our unique system here at Zest. For the purposes of this post to keep things relevant, I’m going to focus on your digital marketing goals, but our system works in any situation.
Planning your 2019 objectives
Planning is crucial to the success of any marketing. Planning consists of setting a clear objective and roadmap to achieve it, with checkpoints/milestones along the way. Having a clear objective is crucial to the success of any marketing and should drive all decisions.
The only two constants in digital are traffic and conversions, and both measuring and planning yours properly will change your fortunes. Our tool helps you to do exactly that.
Without a clear objective (or worse, a fluffy one), decision making and measuring progress is made much harder since there is no stake in the ground against which you can measure. An objective needs to be a goal that anybody can understand, whether they’re a key stakeholder or a new colleague.
How do you know if you have a fluffy objective? That’s easy. It won’t follow the SMART principles of goal setting, and is likely to look something like, “increase number of visitors to our website”. Specific? No. Measurable? Barely. Achievable? Depends on how many. Realistic? Who knows? Time-bound? Nope.
SMART objectives are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic (can also be exchanged for Relevant), and Time-bound. We prefer Realistic over Relevant because we’d hope the goal was relevant to your wider plans, however, being realistic about what can be achieved is really important. An ambitious goal is a good thing, but an unrealistic one is deflating.
